As a new metal supplier
we have struggled with

which kind of metal we should offer out customers

HARD OR SOFT TEMPER
METAL

SOFT TEMPER - Soft temper aluminum is

easy to bend and shape,

has a nicer shine when tumbled

and does not break after repeated bends.

HARD TEMPER - Hard temper

will not bend out of shape easily,

requires much more labor to get a clean shiny finish,

and will break after about 5 back and forth bend.

Our First Plan

All blanks and cuffs were made

of SOFT TEMPER Pure Food Safe Aluminum.

ISSUES

We found that the discs and blanks

needed to be stronger and more stable.

We had complaints that the blanks were too soft and flimsy.

of HARD TEMPER

A Solution Found

The HARD TEMPER was a perfect fit for the discs and blanks.

My Tools Scratch My Metal - What Can I Do?

Tools scratching your metal can be such a headache when you're making jewelry.

I've got a solution that I use for almost all of my own tools.

I get a thin piece of leather or foam (like the craft foam used to make those silly visors or letters).

Cut a square the width of the inner flat area of the tool.

Then glue the square onto that inner flat area of your tool.

I use E-6000 adhesive - my very favorite.

Place a thin layer on the metal, a thin layer on the leather.

Wait 2 minutes.

Then attach the leather to the tool.

Press gently.

LET IT DRY FOR 1 DAY.

It's so temping to use it sooner....... but don't.

The leather is where you will place the front side of your metal.

I actually have a pair of pliers that have leather on each side on of the inner flat areas.

This has been one of my favorites.

......many uses.

........very little money.

home reading tracker

Last year I wasn't good at tracking my students' home reading minutes.

I mean, I still tracked them and all, I just didn't have a successful motivating system.

I used stickers and that's about it. Boring huh? Ya... it was.

I feel like I "dropped the ball" last year, so I am determined to succeed this year.

Since I have a carnival/circus theme in my classroom,

I decided to make a "Reading is Sweet" bulletin board with some cute lollipops I found at Target.

This board is used to track the home reading minutes.

For every 100 minutes read at home, my students earn a pony bead to put on their necklace.

All of my students have a dog tag necklace with their names and "grade 2" stamped on them. If you want to stamp your students' names into dog tag necklaces, then it is important to get a soft aluminum.

(I wouldn't recommend buying them from Oriental Trading.) I got mine on Etsy here.

To start out the school year, each necklace had a piece of candy. My students got to trade in their candy when they read their first 100 minutes (at home) and earned their first bead. I will continue to put cheap/hard candy on their necklaces every so often to keep up the motivation.

Even though my students have only earned one or two beads so far, they are so excited!

They are talking about the patterns they want to make with their beads... and all I tell them is:

Keep reading at home and you will get that pattern!

I require my students to read at least 20 minutes each school night for homework. I send home a reading chart each Monday and it is due each Friday (click here to view my Home Reading Chart). In one week, they should be able to get 100 minutes read, which would earn them one bead a week.

Metal Stamping for Kids Camps

There's been a lot of interest this spring and summer in using the "Food Safe" Aluminum Blanks for Kids Camp projects.

What a fun alternative to leather craft or bird houses.

How to Price Jewelry

Pricing your piece is always a challenging area for artists.

"Triple the Cost of Your Supplies" is a common formula for precious metal jewelers.

This formula worked well before the sterling and gold market went crazy.

Now things get a bit more confusing.

You want to get what your item is worth, but you also want to make a sale.

Pricing your items high enough is very important.

Most people when buying fine jewelry want to know they are purchasing an item of value.

Too low and the customer won't trust that you know what you're doing....

too high and they won't even consider the piece because it's out of their budget.

Jump off ETSY to find prices as a reference. Places like Sundance (the lower priced items) can be a helpful guide. Alternate resource are places like JJill and Coldwater Creek. These are not original pieces, but you will get a feel for what people are willing to pay.

Formulas are great, but there are 2 Key questions to ask yourself:

#1 - What is fair to me?

Don't underprice and devalue your work. You've got time, creativity, and supplies invested.

#2 - What can the market bear?

What is the price of a similar item at a shop I respect.

I make up a pricing chart and try to keep it with me at shows.

You'll always get special requests.

Your customers will appreciate a quick answer on a price.

They should not have to decide the value of your work.

When working with ALTERNATE METALS like

aluminum, copper, and brass

you'll need to throw out the formulas.

Your time and creativity

will always need to be considered MORE

when the supplies are so much less.

On these items consider the following:

Is the piece simple and easy to repeat?

Artisan style or crafty?

***The price should be in the lower range.

Is the piece original, finished well, a work of art?

Not easily copied, involves multiple steps from start to finish?

***The price should be higher.

Easy and Permanent Color in Aluminum

It's a EUREKA moment!!!!!!

You can create PERMANENT contrast

using a Regular or Industrial Sharpie

BY BAKING YOUR PIECES!!!!

Bake your pieces after adding the contrast for 1 hour at 260 Degrees.

Then finish your piece

BUFF

Tumble

Yahoo!!!! The color is permanent!!!!

(This does not work with the Oil Sharpie)

Aluminum does not react well with products to create patinas.

To create a contrast I currently use

Sharpie Marker

Industrial Sharpie Marker

Oil Based Sharpie Marker

to darken the recessed areas of the metal stamped design.

Let the marker dry.

Use an alcohol wipe to take the marker off the upper area.

It is best to fold the wipe like a pillow to prevent taking the marker off the recessed areas.

***The Oil Based Sharpie needs to be removed very quickly

because it sets so quickly.

I do a small section at a time.

I like to add the darkening after the ring or cuff has been curved.

NOW BAKE YOUR PIECE IN A REGULAR OVEN AT 260 DEGREES FOR ONE HOUR.

Finish by buffing or tumbling.

Beautiful!!!

Tips on Creating Contrast in Aluminum Metal Stamping Projects

I currently use an industrial Sharpie on Aluminum. It will need to be baked at 260 degrees for one hour to set the marker. But then it is permanent.

Another great product is Black Max, which is available

at Rio Grande Jewelry Supply.

It causes a chemical reaction

and is commonly used to create contrast in sterling.

Black Max works on Aluminum,

but
BUT IS NOT AS DARK AS IT IS ON STERLING.

You'll need to be very careful

applying to just the areas you want to darken.

It can stain the aluminum and can be difficult to remove.

BLACK MAX IS BEST USED ON STERLING PMC, BRONZE AND COPPER.

Use a thin toothpick to apply the Black Max.

Once the Black Max has darkened the metal

wait about 10 minutes.

Rinse with water and then dry dab dry with a paper towel.

***Be very careful not to get the Black Max

near your eyes or on your skin.

It is an acid and will sting

any little cuts you may have on your hands.

If you make of jewelry this is very likely.

Now you can begin finishing your piece.

Tumble or hand polish.

When you're finished the impressions will be a dark gray on aluminum.

Not as black as sterling. But... it will be very permanent.

***Just a note on other processes for darkening aluminum:

Oil Paints used for painting pictures - but the drying time is at least one week.

NOTE - Apply darkening agents after your bracelet has been curved.

If you curve your cuff after you've darkened your piece you may have little slivers of metal that have been stretched that are not dark.

Gilder's Past

"This wax-based medium can be used to add non-fading color or a gilded finish to materials such as Metal Castings, Filigree, Brass Stampings, Ceramics, Wood, Etched Glass, Polymer Clay, Resin and more! It can be applied as-is to clean, dry, oil-free surfaces with a cloth, cotton swab, sponge, your finger... or thin it with paint thinner to create a paste, paint, stain or wash. Smooth surfaces should be slightly roughened with fine grit sandpaper or steel wool before application. Gilders Paste dries to the touch in 10-15 minutes and completely dries in 12 hours with no tacky residue. One tin of Gilders Paste covers over 30 square feet of surface area. Choose from 9 UV resistant colors which can be layered to create stunning and unique finishes and textures!"

Gilders Paste is a lot like shoe polish. Rub it on and Buff it off. It takes a lot of hand work. I did actually use a dot of linseed oil to soften the paste. it took a lot longer to dry, but I got much better coverage.

My opinion on Gilder's Paste is....

it's a great medium but it's not for beginners or the impatient. If you're working in volume you'll hate how long it takes. But if you pour over each piece until it's perfect this will be for you.

Tumbling Aluminum Blanks

Ah, only a few customers have seen the light and you're now walking the right path. Tumbling is an amazing time saver and doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to get into. My first tumbler was a Harbor Freight tumbler. It lasted for 6 year. Their tumblers are $39.00. You'll be able to fit charms and ring blanks.

If you want to tumble cuffs, that's where you'll have to drop a little more $$. I have a Thumler Tumbler (I know, funny name). It's the big high speed tumbler and I found it at a place called Buffalo Arms, antique gun supply. They had the best price - about $180.00.

You'll need stainless steel shot 5/32 elipse. You can find this at Rio Grande Jewelry Supply. Because aluminum is so soft you don't want to use any shot that has a sharp edge. Most people who do jewelry use a "jewelry mix" - DON'T DO IT! You'll have a scratched up mess.

When using the smaller tumbler, only tumble about 10-20 small pieces at a time. Use about 1 pound of 5/32 shot, fill 1/2 way with cold water, and add a couple of drops of mild shampoo.

I use Breck Kids Wild Coconut 2 in 1 Shampoo Plus Conditioner 12 oz. I find it at Dollar Tree and it works great.

The small tumbler will need to tumbler for about 12 hours. The large high speed tumbler takes about 2-5 hours.

Impressions in Aluminum

This simple yet elegant design is asurprisingly easy process.

You'll need a 1 inch 14 Gauge

Bracelet Blank

Brass Wire and Jewelry Tool

- a round nose for curves and a flat nose for sharp bends.

Use your tools to bend some original designs. These need to be flat, not 3 dimensional.

Pictured below is an arbor press. Mine is a Mittler Brothers 3 ton manual press.

I love this tool. I can smash anything with more pressure than I could ever do on my own.

If you don't have a press. You can use a metal block and a hammer.

Place a metal block on your press...

then your bracelet blank....

Then place your wire pattern on the bracelet blank.

Add another metal block on top. Now pull on the lever to press the wire into the aluminum cuff. Put your weight into this pull to get a deep impression.

Lift the lever and remove the top block. You'll be amazed at what you find.

A very nice impression of the design you just created in wire.

REPEAT this process until you get the design and pattern you like.

Now that you have a variety of impressions in your cuff,

you'll want to create a contrast to help these designs POP out!!!

There are a variety of product you can use to create this contrast. Check earlier blog posts where I discuss using an Industrial Sharpie Marker with Alcohol Wipes.

You must bake your piece in an oven at 260 degrees for one hour to set the marker. But then it will be permanent and can even be tumbled without losing the contrast

You can also use Oil Paint.

This would be the kind used to paint pictures.

Squeeze a little ink onto a paper towel.

Apply ink to the cuff. Work on getting the ink into the deep impressions.

Use a clean paper towel folded like a pillow to clean the ink off the surface of the cuff.

Be careful not to press to hard or this will remove the ink that is in the crevasses.

The surface can be buffed more completely when the ink is dry in 3-5 days.

Wow! Just love that design and contrast!

Anodized, 1100 Aluminum, and 3003?

Here's a run down on the different types of aluminum I use for my discs and ring blanks:

Anodized aluminum is much harder and has a coating on it that makes it safe for your skin. The cool thing about this is that it comes with a beautiful finish and a protective piece of plastic which protects the disc while you're working. You can even stamp with the plastic on and then when your done, peel it off and beautiful sparkle!
***This is great for discs because there no finishing work on the surface.

Pure 1100 aluminum is my favorite. It is food safe and safe on your skin. It's very soft so when you're doing metal stamping it takes a very clear impression and is very easy on your tools.
***PURE Aluminum 1100 is great for anything that is going to touch your skin. It is as strong but gets stronger as you get thicker gauges.

3003 Aluminum is stronger but not as pure. THIS METAL IS MEANT TO BE COVERED OR FINISHED IN SOME WAY BEFORE BEING WORN.
***This is great for covering with fabric or as a polymer clay base.

"Cut to Fit" Ring Blanks

12 Narrow Aluminum Ring Blanks in the Cut to Fit Style.

The metal is 14 gauge.

aprox. 1/4 inch wide.

***These are handmade, expect slight variations.

The Ring Blanks are not completely finished. THEY HAVE BEEN TUMBLED FOR 2-3 HOURS. But you'll want to use a fingernail sanding block under runner water to bring up the shine - move to FINER fingernail filing blocks.
You'll be amazed at the nice results with very little investment.

Stamp your designs first.

for use with these blanks!

Wrap the ring blank around the Wrap 'n Tap

Use a ring sizer to stretch the ring to the size that you want.

Use Sheet Metal Sheers to cut the blank as close to the edge as possible.
(Metal Sheers are available at most home improvement stores.)

Push the ends past each other.

Then realign the ring.

Aluminum does not react well with products to create patinas.

To create a contrast I currently used A Sharpie Marker
to darken the recessed areas of the metal stamped design.

Let the marker dry. Use an alcohol wipe to take the marker off the upper area. It is best to fold the wipe like a pillow to prevent taking the marker off the recessed areas.

***I've done some recent research - 1100 PURE Aluminum, WHICH I USE EXCLUSIVELY, is safe on your skin. There is a much lower rate of skin reaction with PURE ALUMINUM than with sterling silver.
***(Zinc and magnesium are often found in common aluminum and can cause reactions. Lucky for you - I use the best!!!)

14 Gauge Aluminum Cuffs - Chunky is Good

I've been having fun with my new metal cutting equipment. I finally took the plunge, dropped the big bucks. I've started working with 14 gauge aluminum. What a difference. Most cuffs available right now are 20 gauge. But 14 gauge is much thicker. The nice thing about 14 gauge aluminum is that when you're metal stamping there's less chance of ruining the strength of the piece by over working it.

Here's a sample of the cuff that I cut, stamped, , shaped, sanded, and polished. It will be interesting to see what kind of response I get to these. Let me know what you think about the 14 gauge cuffs?

I used the wooden dapping block to get the dome shape to the pendant.

The wooden block is much nicer when working with softer metals like silver and aluminum.
The metal dapping blocks can smash the metal stamping designs.

EXPLORING Bronze CLAY 44959 9/30,10/7,10/14

This class is a complete introduction to Bronze clay. Bronze Clay is made of powdered bronze and binders that work like a clay. When the piece if fired in a kiln the binders burn away and the bronze fuses into a solid piece. This class will expose students to several simple techniques while creating at least three pieces of fabulous bronze jewelry.

Supply fee: $45, payable directly to instructor

(This covers 100 grams of bronze clay, use of all tools, consumable supplies, and 3 firings.)

How to Polish Aluminum

After a few days of Aluminum Polishing disasters I've found a great product-

PlastX - you can find it at Harbor Freight
http://www.harborfreight.com/plastx-clear-plastic-cleaner-and-polish-96662.html

It's made for plastic but it works beautifully on aluminum with no toxic fumes.

On my journey of trying to figure out the best product to use I learned a few things:

1) Never use an acid on aluminum - vinegar, lemon juice, etc on aluminum. It totally takes off any shines and leaves it looking chalky. Knowing this I realized that many of the things needed for plastic would be the same for sealing the aluminum and bringing up the shine.

2) Aluminum is very soft and only very gentle products can be used on it.

3) Aluminum needs some kind of protective coating.

Test it out! I think you'll be surprized at how nice it turns out. I've actually started using it in my tumbler as a charger with fine chopped walnut shell media. It works beautifully!!!

How to use a Ring Blank and Wrap n Tap

I'm in the process of making a video. Here's an explanation:

Place the ring blank on a metal block. Using a stamp, hammer the design into the metal. Repeat this process until you have the design you like.

Then take a black sharpie marker and fill in the recessed areas left from the stamping. Once the sharpie is dry, use an alcohol wipe or a jewelry buffer to buff the top layer of marker off. The recessed areas should remain dark. This creates contrast.

Now the wrap and tap should be in your right hand (switch if you are left handed). The small circle should be facing up. The stamped ring blank should be in your left hand with the design facing up.
Open the jaws of the pliers and place the blank into the wrap and tap. I use the middle circle most of the time. Pinch down on the rounded end of the ring blank.
While squeezing the wrap and tap with your right hand, use your left hand to bend the ring around the circle form. Try to get the ring blank to hug the form by pushing down and around the form.
Now flip the ring and repeat the process, so that the other side is exactly the same curve.

To even things out a bit you can turn the ring blank (still on the circle form of the wrap and tap) so that both ends are facing up. Squeeze the sides together and now squeeze the jaws of the Wrap and Tap together. The wrap and Tap should now have a good hold on the ring. Use your left hand to even out any areas that are not symmetrical.

If the ring is too small you can use a ring mandrel to enlarge it. Push the ring onto the mandrel a little larger than the size you want (it will spring back a little). Now flip the ring and repeat this process.

And there you have. A great adjustable ring.

I have been looking and trying to make blank band rings for a year YEAH !!

Will this be okay on the skin and will it fade or turn dark? thank you!!

I am so glad to hear that! I've been wearing them to test them out and they don't fade or turn dark! They're a lot like silver in that they tarnish and scratch, but they polish up easily. I've done a little research on how they are on your skin, if you don't have any allergies to the metal you should be fine. Also there's some talk about Alzeimers and aluminum but most of the reports state that ingesting aluminum in more dangerous than having it touch your skin. I usually tell people to cover the inside with some type of clear coat to be safe. They have a clear coat of Rustoleum that works well or I've heard good things about Sally Hanson Ultimate Shield Base/Topcoat.

New Question About the Best Adhesive to use for Jewelry

QUESTION
Hey There-Love your shop, supplies and finished pieces, beautiful.
I am a polymer clay and bead artist and am delving into ring now. If I purchase some ring blanks, I am curious as to what I would use to adhere something besides polymer clay, like glass or stone. What kind of adhesive. Thanks for the info.

ANSWER
I've tried a lot of different things, but I always come back to E6000. It has a slight flex when dry - so things don't pop off. The one problem... it takes at least 7 days to set well. The patience is worth it though. Also, I've started using Alcohol wipes found at your local drug store to clean up as I'm working with the E-6000. It really solves the sticky icky mess problem!

I've just started to make an Aluminum Ring Blank.

Finally a ring blank for Polymer Clay. This is the perfect base for building your polymer clay ring
It can be baked along with the clay and becomes a permanent part of your ring.

The ring blank measures 1/2 inch wide and measures a size 5 at it smallest, but can be expanded to up to a size 10 comfortably.

What to do with an Aluminum Cuff Bracelet

Here's my latest project using the Aluminum Cuff Bracelet Blanks that I sell on my "gottagettadeal" ETSY site:
I'm selling the finished bracelets on my "hotglass" Etsy site to raise money for Christian Vil, a mission just 20 miles outside of Port au Prince. This project is being support by our church - Richwoods Christian Church in Peoria IL. To find out more check out www.richwoods.org

Supplies List

- an aluminum cuff bracelet blank from "gottagettadeal" on ETSY
- 1-1/2 by 1/2 inch copper blanks available at "bopper" on ETSY'
- 1/4 inch letter stamps, a metal hole punch and tumbler from Harbor Freight
- swirl metal stamp and metal block available from Beaducation
- small grommets and grommet spreading tool from Michael's
- a jewelry hammer and stainless steel shot from Rio Grande
- a fine sharpie marker
- jewelry polishing pads from Rings 'n Things

The Process

1. Squeeze the Bracelet Blanks closed so that there is no opening. This will prevent the cuffs from getting tangled in the tumbler.

2. Tumble 6 Aluminum Bracelet Blanks with
stainless steel shot
cold water (Fill tumbler half full.),
one tablespoon of vinegar,
3 drops of dish soap (No oxy or anti bacterial it will turn the metal black.)

3. Run the tumbler for 3-4 hours to take off any rough edges and bring up the shine.

4. Rinse the bracelet blanks with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

5. Open each blank so that it is flat.

6. Using the hole punch, punch two holes in the copper blank about 1/16 from the edge.

7. Using a ruler find center on the bracelet blank and make a mark with your sharpie.

8. Place the copper blank on top of the bracelet blank centering both pieces. Use masking tape to hold these two pieces in place while you work.

9. Slide the two taped pieces into the hole punch and punch a hole in the same spot that you punched the hole for the copper blank. Do the same thing on the opposite side.

10. Place the grommet in the hole from the front to the back. Place the blank with the back up and the grommet on the metal block.

11. Place the grommet spreading tool in the center of the grommet and tap the spreading tool 3 times lightly with the hammer.

12. Now using the ball peen side of the hammer, tap the grommet area until all the metal is smooth to the touch.

13. Do the same thing on the other side of the copper blank.

14. Remove the masking tape.

15. Now your ready to stamp the metal. Remember to start with the middle letter so that your words will be centered.

16. When you've completed stamping your design, use a fine sharpie marker to fill in all the recessed letters and designs. (Many people use chemicals such as Black Max for this step . I use sharpies so that this project is child safe.)

17. Once the sharpie is dry, use a polishing pad to remove extra marker that is on the bracelet and bring back the shine.

18. Use a coffee cup or a bracelet mandrel to reform the bracelet to the wrist shape.

Painting Aluminum Cuff Braclets

You have good questions:

Are they sturdy enough to hold up on their own without polymer clay or anything fused to them?

Yes, they are sturdy enough to hold up. Check out some of the ETSY sites using them. Just search Aluminum Cuff. Make sure that when you paint them that you either use a paint that has a primer in it, or prime it. The best paint for a base layer would be the Rustoleum for Plastic. The Flexibility will prevent cracking when you open and close the bracelet.

Is aluminum safe right against the skin?

I've heard different things about this. I tend to err on the side of safety, if you're not going to cover it, I would paint both sides of the bracelet to protect your skin.
Any suggestions for me?

I've seen it all before, these crazy gadgets to make your own frit.

And then the glass dust issue .....

that's enough to scare you from jumping into doing this yourself.

Well I started to think....

there has to be an easier and safer way to make your own frit.

A little experimenting and EUREKA, I've got it!!!!

Pull out that old blender you were planning on selling at your next garage sale!!!!!

Add some glass to your blender.

If you're using dichroic glass, l like to use the thin clear glass. It adds amazing little flashes of color between the layers.

Add some water.

There's no special formula or amount, because you'll drain the water out at the end.

***The water is very important here because it keeps the glass dust from floating around. If you haven't already heard, glass dust is very dangerous to your lungs.

Turn on the blender. It's amazing!!!! The blender cuts right through the glass.

(Remember I like to use the thin glass for this.)

Now go into to your pile of mismatched socks.

Place one sock over an empty cup. Put it down a little in the center top.

(This step reminds me of using a filter to make coffee.)

Swirl the water and the ground glass.

(This gets as much of the glass as possible floating in the water before you filter.)

Now slowly pour the water and glass in the sock filter.

The water and the extremely fine glass will fall to the bottom of the cup

and the frit will get caught by the sock.

Once you've caught all the frit, spread it out on a pan to dry.

There you have it - You've just made glass frit!

When adding frit into my designs I like to mix it with a glass glue like Glasstac or you can even use Elmers. This helps control where your frit goes in your design.

How to fuse glass to silver wire.

I was recently asked about how to fuse glass on the ends of silver wire. Here's the question.....

I would like to wrap a fine silver wire in a curlicue around a mandrel and then fuse glass on the ends. What would be the best way to do this.

Here's what I would suggest.... Get a hot plate and put the little kiln shelf on top and then place the pieces of glass that you want to attach on the shelf. Slowly bring up the heat on the hot plate as high as you can go. Use a small bit of glass (the same COE) and place it between the wire and the glass you want to fuse. Use a butane torch (the kind you use for Creme Brullee (they have these for sale at Harbor Freight for about $4.99.) Flash the heat on and off the glass and the wire - focusing on the bit of glass between the two pieces. Once you know the piece isn't going to pop from thermal shock, then really heat up the middle piece until it's glowing. (Try to shoot the flame across, not directly toward the hot plate.) As soon as the mid section looks glowing orange, use something, a small graphite paddle would be the best, and quickly smash the layers together. Give the whole piece a flash of heat to prevent any cool spots. Then put the whole thing in a fiber blanket and let it cool slowly. Because your piece is small it shouldn't need to be annealed. If you find that it cracks. Try annealing it after you finish your final flash.

I've been busy in the studio creating a helpful little tool

a handmade earring jig. In the craft stores there are cute little jigs available, but they're hard to work with and the plastic pieces break easily. I've taken the time to build a jig out of wood, dowel rods, screws and wood glue. This jig makes a basic french wire. You can get the same results time after time.

Bronze Clay Pendants

I've finally got some pictures of my most recent pieces in Bronze Clay. I'll have to admit there is a little learning curve to this new medium. It wasn't until my third firing that I was happy with what was happening. Luckily I wasn't toasting fine silver!!!! I do have to admit I appreciate the much lower cost of the Bronze Clay. And the patina and the warm golden color is beautiful!!!!

Pendant Fused Glass with Dichroic Sparkles - Photo of Detail of Historic Home

Description

This is an original glass cab with dichroic sparkles fused in clear Glass.

Behind the glass is an original edited photograph of architectural details from a historic home in Peoria IL.

This is a fusion of original fused glass, and original photography.

I look for fun photos.
I edit them to simplify or change the color.
I cut 3 layers of glass, fuse these with dichroic designs at 1450 degrees.
Then I combine the the glass and the photo and attach then with waterproof adhesive onto a surgical steel base.

Each pendant comes with a leather necklace cord or a voile and cotton cord necklace cord.

This piece measure 1 inch in diameter.

What kind of adhesive can I us on an aluminum bracelet blank?

E6000 is my all time favorite!!!! This is what I would do:

1) rough up the side of the bracelet your planning on using the glue on, steel wool or sandpaper will work
(do this under running water at your sink so you don't breath in any metal dust - it's not very healthy)

2) use an old kids paint brush or Q-tip (something you can throw away) to spread a thin layer of glue on the bracelet

3) spread a thin layer of glue on the felt

4) wait 10 minutes or so (until it's tacky)

5) now press the two pieces together and let dry
(it will hold forever and it's waterproof (sweatproof)

***if you want to remove it for some reason you can soak it in fingernail polish remover

Finally, a workshop that teaches the basics of wire wrapping for jewelry! In this workshop the instructor will provide clear, simple instructions on how to connect, dangle and decorate jewelry using beautiful wrapped wire. Each student will begin with a spool of copper wire to practice their new skills before jumping into silver wire designs. Use of tools is provided. Those interested in purchasing their own tool kit may contact the instructor for recommendations.

Egyptians are said to be the inventors of glass. Study a little history the fun way and make your very own glass MUMMY! Students will learn the basic process of glass casting from making a mold to melting the glass. Guaranteed to be a good time!

PAG reserves the right to cancel or combine classes if minimum enrollment is not met. All classes require a minimum number of students.

Chicago Bean Sculpture at Millenium Park - A Pendant!!!

Original art jewelry by glass artist Liz Barnes.

This is a fusion of original fused glass, and original photography.

This Fused Glass cab with a sparkling dichroic moon is fused between the layers of glass. Behind the fused glass is an original photograph that my friend Matt Swain took of the cityscape of Chicago reflected in the Bean Sculpture in Millenium Park. Then I went crazy with some fun editing.

I attach the glass and the photo with waterproof adhesive. It is then attached to a surgical steel pendant plate.

Each pendant comes with a leather cord with a sterling silver clasp.

This pendant measures 1 in diameter.

***I cut layers of glass circles, and punch out designs and then fuse these glass designs at 1450 degrees and then anneal them at 900 degrees.

Screaming Mom Designs

OK, with my hands all swollen and jewelry being a real pain right now, I've started using my original photography to design some crazy things: shoes, skateboards, hoodies.... It's been so much fun. Check them out and tell me what you think.

It's been a rough spring for me. I got my second hip replacement on April 21st. But beginning in February I started getting the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Lifting a book is incredibly painful. Obviously making jewelry has been very difficult. My sister Bonnie has been wonderful in helping me finish the pieces that I had in process.

***The Market will feature the work of many local artists and crafters. Some home based businesses will also be featured. Throughout the event there will be performances by local musicians.

For now I will be selling my current jewelry stock with no plans to make more. My current goal is to move more exclusively into the area of art photography. I've been incorporating photography into my most recent fused glass pieces. Now the photography will get the opportunity to stand on it's own.

Who is Liz Barnes???

My name is Liz Barnes and I named my business Pendant Fusion
because I'm always adding something in combination to make my jewelry. Lately, I've been combining fused glass, poetry and original photography. I also love using PMC to make jewelry.

My day job is homeschooling my two kids - Zach and Heather. A few days a week I teach classes in Glass Fusing and PMC at the Peoria Art Guild.

I've always been into making things. As a kid, I remember lying in the grass - analyzing each blade of grass. I've always had a love for nature and an appreciation for God's creation. I love to HYPER-FOCUS on the details!!! When I was in Art School, which took me forever (1982-1998), I was told to look at the BIG PICTURE. But..... I was always drawn to the details first. I discovered Georgia O'Keefe and realized that Art has NO RULES. Art is CREATING the NEW & ORIGINAL!!!

PMC, (Precious Metal Clay) is my favorite medium. I can dream ideas.... and they become reality. So many mediums control the end product, but with PMC the sky's the limit!!!!

I finally received my bachelor’s degree in Art from Illinois State University (concentrating in Art Education, Art History and Glass. While at ISU I took Glassblowing classes with the world famous - Jack Wax. I've also taken glassblowing workshops through the Art Institute of Chicago with an amazing and patient instructor - Lance Friedman. In 2004 I received my Artisan Certification from the PMC Guild.

After graduating from ISU I directed an after school arts program for “at risk students” in the Chicago Area and taught K-8 art in a private school.

My passion is to reflect God's beauty, creativity and mystery through my life and her art.

A few years ago, I got a huge surprise. I was looking through my PMC Guild Studio magazine when I came across this exciting picture on PAGE 12:
